There is VERY little doubt that the amount Taxpayers have ALREADY contributed would result in a funded ratio in excess of 100% if the Plan’s promised pensions had a generosity level EQUAL to that which can be provided by the 4%-of-pay that is all most Private Sector workers typically get in retirement security contributions from their employers.

“Every year, the treasurer prepares an “annual required contribution” (ARC) to each plan: the Vermont State Employees’ Retirement System and Vermont State Teachers’ Retirement System.
For fiscal year 2018, Pearce recommends $52 million in state funding for VSERS and $88.4 million for VSTRS, a total pension obligation of $150.4 million. That’s a big bite — and a 3.6 percent increase over last year’s ARC.
Here’s the rub: Of that $150.4 million, only $22.4 million is the cost of current obligations. The rest — a stunning $128 million — is required to make up for past shortfalls.
The biggest resulted from two events: the Great Recession of 2008, which hammered the pension funds’ investments, and a period of underfunding VSTRS that lasted from 1991 to 2007. Since then, the state has paid its ARC in full every year, but the 16 years of underfunding took its toll in lost investment income.
As a result, says Pearce, roughly 80 percent of next year’s ARC is effectively “the mortgage payment on our unfunded liability.” Those mortgage payments will continue for years to come.”

One of the major themes of this blog is under funded pensions. They are technically bankrupt and require massive infusions of rescue money from tax payers. Tax payers have been pushed to the brink in many states, they are fleeing their homes. By bankrupt I mean every pension fund out there, whether public or private, should be 100% funded, daily. Your argument assumed the $5k was in the bank the day TL painted the house. It was a false assumption in the context of pension funding.

Nj PFRS is in much better shape than any of the others in NJ. I do not consider them linked to any other pension, nor should they. There was a successful push to separate this system from the grimy grasp of the politicians. Again as Mary Pat says, the police portions are itty bitty.
NJ for all its faults is either first or second in per capita income in this country, has the best or second best education system as well, even with Newark and Camden etc. I know. I see the requirements for a NHS scholarship state by state. We have the toughest PSAT scores in the country to qualify. We are smarter here.
The home values will continue to be crazy this year. Why? Cause there will be lots of buyers. Buyers with young kids that want a great school system. Many sellers walking away with more than they ever dreamed of. So don’t tell me your local cops pension fund is putting people on the bread line. It ain’t. Yes taxes are outrageous here. But salaries are among the best in the country. Make it here and then move(which I beleive you did correct?) I thought you said you left th country but the insinuating that it was FL). I bought a lake house in PA last month. First step. Still don’t know when or if I’ll move out Jersey. Odds are good at some point but I never say never. Wife hates the cold. I could see selling here and snowbirding between PA and FL(dec Jan feb mar). I don’t ever want to voluntarily move to far from my kids that I never see them. That’s an accurate statement, with a HUGE “but”, the “but” being that (when using the identical assumptions and methodology as that employed by Moody’s, and used in the valuation of Single-employer Private Sector DB Plans) PFRS has a funding ratio of just about 50%.
And to put that in perspective, on that SAME basis, when Private sector Plan funding ratio’s drop below 60%, they are consider to be in such poor financial condition that FUTURE service accruals are stopped.

Don’t take my word for it, he said it. Why is that? Hmmm. Same as the police. ZERO shortage in CA too. AVERGAE teacher in CA is pulling down $80K in salary (some make as much as $160K in salary Bay Area) and another $40K in benefits. For a part time, 37 week “work year”, and a 36 hour (contracted) “work week”.
Let us do the “CA Math”, shall we = $120,000/37/36= $90/Hour … MF’er, such a paltry sum! How on earth can these dedicated public servants survive on just $90/Hour?? Low pay all the way … 😎😎😎

I have several acquaintances who are NJ teachers. They tell me there are more qualified applicants than positions (even before COVID), and many districts are now abusing new hires to save money ………. by having no intention of keeping them long enough to get tenured.
It’s moving to what we have had in colleges for years …….. a revolving door of “instructors”/non-tenured employees. They’re MUCH cheaper.

E, There is no ZERO teacher shortage where we live.
Per articles I have read, there does appear to be areas (far from NJ) where teacher “wages” are much lower ($40K – $60K), and they say that they can’t live on that.
But what they don’t want to do is make the comparison (with Private Sector jobs requiring reasonably comparable experience, education, skills, and knowledge) on a Total Compensation (wages + pensions + benefits) basis. Why? Because it will most often show that they aren’t under-compensated, only that more of their COMPARABLE compensation is in the form of deferred income.
Unfortunately for us in NJ, on a Total Compensation basis, because of their much higher “wages” here, many teachers are indeed over-compensated ………. but of course, no where even remotely near the HUGE overcompensation of NJ Police 🙂 🙂 🙂

You are talking about at least one of every seven workers in America*, most of whom are only “public workers” for a portion of their working careers.
1. There is no doubt that some public employees are “overpaid”, mainly due to pensions and benefits.
2. And many are not.
3. It is virtually impossible to determine, or agree the extent of that over (or under) payment. (TL’s GIGO demonstrations notwithstanding.)
4. There is also no doubt that state and local government pensions are (mostly) underfunded. For this we can all agree, there are remedies available. They can be made sustainable and reliable. It has been done. It should be done.

E….we don’t need more teachers we have virtual learning now and with more parents working from home into the the very long future, and dire financial straights for towns and municipalities schools won’t be so quick to hire more teachers. Maybe on a part-time basis as needed. And with more virtual and kids learning at home how many more principals and administrators are really needed?
Parents have lots more disposable income since they are working from home, private school and parochial schools will be more the norm especially with all of this “woke” curriculum being forced down the throats (no pun intended) for all public schools.
Homeschooling networks are thriving right now so me thinks that public school enrollment may continue to significantly dwindle through the years. Eventually, those having to pay through the nose for services they are not receiving will put up some kind of a stink

MJ. Your second paragraph is spot on. Lots of areas that choose to not fund education like we do here in NJ see a big increase in private school.
Where I disagree with you is the virtual learning. It may be learning but it is NOT school. It should not replace the learning and socializing of actually being with other kids. It might be better for kids getting bullied though. Although not for kids living with shit Parents. Ask AZ about the schools out there. He will tell you.
I think the teachers should stop complaining about the virus and put a mask on and teach the kids. They need to be IN school.
Me personally? I’d go nuts spending all day every day working from home. Nuts. So would my wife. And she can and occasionally does. But less than 5% of the time. Hates it.
I was on a call the other day last week and a guy answered the door in his robe and slippers and sweats at 3pm or so. Million $ Home. Said he hasn’t left the house or changed his clothes in four days. Is that progress? Really?
Said his company, which I won’t name here, pays for a catered lunch to be delivered every day since this started. Wow. Usually enough for two so his wife, who like TL, also works from home, would eat every day with him. Not sure if she in same clothes for four days. He seemed happy and content like the folks in WALL*E. Lol.
AND he even stated he put on 15 lbs since started even with a home gym. Lol. So you can’t say “we’re all in this together” cause we aren’t. So TL can spare me with this you “wouldn’t make it in the real world”. Lol. She couldn’t last a month in mine after being pampered at home for almost a years now. Folks like TL like to point the finger at me as they talk with someone struggling as tho she gets their pain. Makes her feel good to make ME the enemy, which in her mind obsolves her of any guilt she may have by knowing she really didn’t have to bust her ass to get where she is compared to the guy in the trenches or that bar owner who is on rough times. She just points at me and says HE is your problem. Walks back in her big house and makes more cocoa. She doesn’t really care about him as he drives off in his 20 year old Camry. She’s never appreciative for what SHE has. Only likes to bitch about what others may have. Even when it is less than she has. Pompous as they come. Doesn’t realize it tho. I’m gonna tell her the truth, not what she wants to hear.

E, YOU are not the enemy ……….. but your pensions & benefits ARE materially too generous and therefore need to be materially reduced.
Now I’m not advocating for reduction in PAST service accruals (EVEN THOUGH also way too generous and justifiable), just very material reduction in FUTURE service accruals for all CURRENT workers.
The BS that goes on in the PUBLIC Sector of ONLY applying pension/benefits reductions to new workers (and perhaps to those with less than 5 years of service) is just that …BS. It doesn’t work that way in the Private Sector and it shouldn’t work that way in the Public Sector.

E, plenty of socialization for kids with sports leagues, clubs and other activities either as part of the school or part of the community. Kids are kids and will still want to be with friends once visiting each others’ homes open up again.
Kids who have it rough in school, kids who have been bullied, they love being virtual and it really works for them as it does for many.
Sad about the call you made. Sadly, depression is a huge co-morbidity due to Covid-19.
But most that I know, love working from home. More disposable income, less stress with driving, more time to spend with family, more time to enjoy activities, work out, take a class, etc.
I know a bunch of people who have gotten new and better jobs while interviewing virtually. Whether you like it or not, technology will have a huge impact of schooling and education even at the college level.
BTW who is an influencer and of what ?????

There are many benifits to working from home. I’m only one town away from the Pd I work in so the commute is 2 min. My wife’s is 10. So we might feel different if we had a 40 mile commute each day. I just don’t see a thriving compassionate society where kids sit on their laptops all day. As it is now, most people (including the “woke” types, first instinct is to video someone in trouble instead of helping them or at least calling for help. Half the reason for the hate on both sides is social media. I liked Biden’s speech. I wish him well. We can’t divorce our liberal neighbors and TL can’t divorce the public employees who live in her town.
Personally I feel the majority of kids do MUCH better learning from a live human being in person. Adults working from home is a seperate issue. I think I would like the interaction of seeing human beings other than my dear wife during the workday. Some folks are fine with it. I like the change of scenery. I don’t like being a homebody. Some people live it. I like the outdoors etc.
but I totally get why some LOVE it, as much as say i enjoy the remoteness of the woods and being of the grid so to speak I do like interacting with people too.

I never claimed that I was an “influenceer”, although I have stated that I’m trying to “educate” those who don’t fully understand the HUGH true cost of Public Sector DB pensions and free or heavily-subsidized retiree healthcare benefits.

Personally I hated school, went to nine of them K-12. But I can see how other kids needed the friends. It needs to be flexible, there is no need for the system to grab you and own you. It’s sickening. Parents should guide their children not hand them over.

Resounding yes!!! Unless you have issues with other dogs being aggressive w her, give her a chance. She deserves it and you shouldn’t even need to ask!!!! If you do, hats off to you sir👍
I have 2 rescue dogs and one old cat and recently my younger daughter (16) brought home a kitten. Got a 1580, can’t say no I guess.

I am going to do a meet n greet in the next few days with Bella, and I am looking to rescue/adopt Bella. But a Lab Chihuahua mix…@62#…?… LOL. That is one big Chihuahua. All my rescue dogs get along fine. I do have four Chihuahua’s here right now, between 5# and 12#. My largest right now is my American Bulldog @90#, and every pup you can imagine in-between, including a Dalmatian, a German Shepherd, a 28# Schnauzer (the “Sheriff”, aka “Boss”, of my Pack), several Pit Bulls and 2 Frenchie Bulldogs. Bella would be perfect here.
