Trumping Murphy Principles

The cosmic joke was that Trump convinced a vast swathe of working-class white folks in the Midwest that he cared about their well-being. The truth was that he couldn’t care less. I don’t mean that as speculation or an opinion. That was a stone-cold fact during the 2016 campaign and throughout Trump’s presidency to this very day. To Trump, his voters are his audience, his chumps, his patsies, his base. Guns, criminalizing abortion – Trump took up those conservative positions not because he believed in them but because they were his path to power. That was what I meant when I told Congress that Trump is a con man. (from Disloyal by Michael Cohen – pages 250-1 )

This quote from the Cohen book that I will be finishing and posting today got me to speculating about Governor Murphy’s motivations. With just a few word changes:

The cosmic joke was that Murphy convinced a vast swathe of working-class black folks in the Northeast that he cared about their well-being. The truth was that he couldn’t care less. I don’t mean that as speculation or an opinion. That was a stone-cold fact during the 2017 campaign and throughout Murphy’s governorship to this very day. To Murphy, his voters are his audience, his chumps, his patsies, his base. Baby bonds, criminalizing the policeMurphy took up those liberal positions not because he believed in them but because they were his path to power. That was what I meant when I told you that Murphy is a con man.

The similarities struck me when Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver got the short straw and, presumably at the behest of the Biden people with Murphy’s approval, set out to calm some waters yesterday.

“To law enforcement, I want to share a message with you: We need you, we appreciate you and want you to know with all the noise that’s going on, we will never defund you,” Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver said, her voice breaking as she tearfully addressed the officers standing on the sidelines. Oliver’s statement was the first time a member of Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration has taken such a firm stance on the “defund the police” movement ignited by the death of George Floyd in late May.

When asked about it later at his covid briefing/rally:
.

.
He claimed not to have seen it (though nothing about having approved it):
.

.
Later in the briefing Murphy was asked about another liberal policy:
.

.
‘Tax-the-rich’ only works if the rich agree. Another instance where they don’t and another fold coming:

Now, an industry test of backup systems later this month is turning into a showcase that Wall Street firms can pack their bags if needed. Modern markets are built on speed, but the biggest companies say they’ll sacrifice a few fractions of a second if it means avoiding billions in taxes.

“On Sept. 26, we will conduct a test to ensure that the industry is prepared for a move out of New Jersey should the tax pass,” the coalition, which calls itself the Coalition to Prevent the Taxing of Retirement Savings, said in a statement Friday.

.
Finally there’s that oval office visit where Trump bashed Obama and Biden while Murphy, when given a direct opportunity to defend Obama and Biden:
.

.
Chose expediency over what are supposed to be his principles.
