Breaking News: S5 Passes NJ Legislature

The bill that transfers ‘management’ of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (PFRS) to a Board of Trustees of PFRS just passed the New Jersey legislature.

In this case, after amendments made by Governor Murphy, ‘management’ means no money being transferred and no independent actuarial valuation of liabilities allowed but they will be able to have a lot more meetings if they want.

Combining both houses, there were 2 no votes, 7 abstentions, and 108 voting for. Here is the bill history from the NJ Legislature website to date:

S5 ScaSa w/GR (3R) Transfers management of PFRS to Board of Trustees of PFRS.

John, did any of the “technical changes” that Gov Murphy called for to protect taxpayers in his conditional veto get dropped in the final bill that was passed ?

    • I’m just learning the legislative process here but I guess if there had been amendments they would have had to have another line on them and an up or down vote – which I did not see in the listing. So the do-nothing bill that the governor wound up writing is probably what we have.

So basically this bill as amended accomplishes nothing.
