Missing Pension Commission

Tomorrow it will be thirty days since the New Jersey Pension and Benefit Study Commission last updated their one-page website that prominently includes the line:

The Commission will report its initial findings and recommendations to the Governor within thirty days.

It is now 54 days since the formation of that commission, 47 days since nine* members were announced, and  29 days since the commission chairman gave an update to the public:

“We’ve got a group of people who are very smart,” he said. “We’re balanced. The two meetings and two conference calls we’ve had so far have been enormously apolitical. Which is the goal.”

So where’s the report?  I have two modest proposals on possible reasons for the delay:

It could be that the commission did have a report ready on September 1 but the conclusion was “Christie not involved in Bridgegate’ since they were mistakenly provided with the instructions that most Trenton study commissions get.

Ethan Kra arrogant

One of the helpful features of this blog platform is that I get a list of search terms which show who was directed to this blog with the search language they used to get here and a history is kept.  For example here are three such terms that led people to this blog within the last thirty days:

new jersey public pensions

christie pension news

“ethan kra” arrogant

Ethan Kra is a member of the study commission who I only know from his time at the microphone at Enrolled Actuaries meetings.  Is he arrogant?  Maybe, but the issue here is who would be searching for proof of that presumption?  Someone else on the commission?   These are people who all have their own slants on the pension crisis in New Jersey that they developed over the years and conforming to one view for public dissemination (and ridicule) might cause friction, if not stasis.

* The website lists a tenth member not formally annouced:

Raj Tatta, Retired Senior Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, with emphasis on being the key partner for Human Resource Services.  He brought his skills to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria with restructuring their Human Resources’ policies and procedures.

For some reason they want to spare themselves the embarrassment of spewing out the same conclusions which were spewed out over and over by past commissions in the last 15-20 years. Or they are waiting for Christie to tell them what their finding are. The latter is a more feasible conclusion. Not only will Christie tell them what to say but he will also tell them when to say it as to best suit him and no one else. There is no help for the taxpayers or the public employees and keeping them at odds only helps Christie. TL is merely another sheep whom Christie counts on to help promote his rise to president for his own benefit, nobody else.

I think that the Commission should sit back, take a breath and look into the following if Christie would let them.Remember like all other scandals State, Local or National the cover up is usually worse than the crime.

Great idea …. because there may be some behind-the-scenes corruption, simply put off or ignore your (the Commission’s) charge to fix the greatest problem NJ has had (or likely ever will have) …. the grossly excessive, unnecessary, unjust (to Taxpayers), and clearly unsustainable pensions granted ALL of it’s Public Sector workers (both State AND Local)……… AND retiree healthcare promises AT LEAST as bad.

Seems like I should ask again………..

John, Why do you put up with this. You do realize that you can block his IP address.

TL is a modern day big brother!, She wants to exterminate any opposition to her flawed facts and ridiculous ideas. She is now is trying to tell John how to run his blog. If she had her druthers, she would remove everyone’s constitutional rights except her own. She would make a excellent dictator. Maybe she can take over Cuba, that way she can keep a close eye on the United States!

  3. Sorry, I didn’t know Sept. 1 was their given goal. I thought it was your assumption that something would drop on Labor Day.

    • Also, re the Ethan Kra search: I just did a search with “Ethan Kra” only (quoted), and only 3600 results came back. Even without adding “arrogant” to the search term.

contrast to you: ‘”John Bury” actuary’: 9600

So, don’t expect much in the way of public comment on Kra’s supposed arrogance. I have never talked with him directly, afaik, but I’ve known of him through actuarial org politics — which might be why someone is doing that search, not because of this commission.

(also, you could look at the IP addresses associated with the terms to see where it could be coming from… might not tell you much, though. But if it’s coming from Illinois, say, this might be about SOA business, not NJ business)
