Poor Standards for Governments

Union County, NJ is a fiscal basket case.  Taxes are among the highest in the nation even as massive amounts of debt are being piled up, trust funds are being misappropriated, OPEB obligations are being fraudulently reported, and municipalities are desperate to secede.  So where does freeholder Vice-Chairman Christopher Hudak find pride and comfort?

My first thought upon hearing this claptrap tonight was to wonder how much Standard & Poor’s needed to be paid off to come up with such drivel.

According to county check registries $18,400 was the amount paid to Standard & Poor’s on 9/25/13 for ‘analytical services’.  Previously on August 15, 2012 they were paid $50,900 for ‘legal advertisement’ and on August 3, 2011 $43,600 for more ‘analytical services’.  No payments to Moody’s appeared in the check registries.

My second thought was how much S&P would have charged Detroit for the same service, a service that I now find they did provide.
